Description
Dr Thomas Arne (1710-1778) stands out as the most popular and successful native English composer of the eighteenth century. His lyrical melodic gift was perfectly suited to his career as theatre composer at Drury Lane, where he spent much of his working life, as well as his work as a composer for the London Pleasure Gardens.
A series of Shakespeare productions at the theatre in the 1740s yielded several song settings, including this delightful song from As You Like it. Originally written for voice, sopranino recorder and strings, Arne skilfully uses the recorder to portray the dulcet sounds of a sweet singing bird.
The song translates naturally to the medium of S A T B recorder quartet.

AK’s arrangement of Arne’s music is a delight to play, particularly in a dreary lockdown January. It conjures up memories of seeing As You Like It for real. The parts are interesting without being too tricky, and fit together well.
