Description
The song Blackbird was released in 1968 by The Beatles on their album The Beatles (also known as The White Album). Considered by the band themselves to be one of their best songs, it has since been covered by artists as diverse as Neil Diamond, Beyoncé and Julie Fowlis.
The lyrics to Blackbird have been interpreted in various ways, including as an anti-discrimination song, or as a reference to nature and spiritual awakening. A transcription for recorders seems apt because of the instrument’s traditional association with birdsong – the original version of the song even featured a recording of a real blackbird. Performers are invited to add improvised or recorded birdsong of their own.
