Description
Dr Thomas Arne (1710-1778) stands out as the most popular and successful native English composer of the eighteenth century. His lyrical melodic gift was perfectly suited to his career as theatre composer at Drury Lane where he spent much of his working life, and where many of his famous Shakespeare song settings were performed.
Thou Soft Flowing Avon was however composed to words by David Garrick, for the Shakespeare jubilee in Stratford in 1769. Arne’s music often delightfully evokes a sense of nostalgia and gentle national pride, and this is a perfect example.
