Description
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) was the most important composer at the court of Louis XIV. Both of the works presented here are in a grand, militaristic style, typical of French royal ceremonial music during this period.
The Marche pour la Cérémonie des Turcs comes from the comédie-ballet Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, first performed at the Château of Chambord in 1670.
Les Folies d’Espagne features in a royal collection of pieces for wind ensemble with military-style percussion dating back to the 1670s. The basic chordal structure of the ‘Folies’ (or ‘Follia’) had been used by musicians for improvisation for centuries, but Lully’s variations are thought to be the first formalised version. This transcription is based on Lully’s existing theme and two variations, with a further three variations freely added.
